The connection goes through Förpacknings- och tidningsinsamlingen (FTI) on behalf of Swedish Plastic Recycling.

We help you choose recyclable plastic packaging

The plastic manual is an award-winning guide for helping you choose the type of plastic packaging that is recyclable. The manual is published and revised annually by Swedish Plastic Recycling in partnership with FTI. Together, we hold customer meetings and offer seminars with materials specialists and experts in the field of recyclable plastic packaging. Our task is to ensure that you as producer are kept updated on developments in the plastic packaging market.

What does the law regarding producers responsibilities entail?

As a producer you are obliged to fulfil the law of producers responsibility. This means that every company that produces, imports or sells plastic packaged goods on the Swedish market also shall:

• ensure that a collection system exists, through which customers and other end consumers can return used packaging.
• ensure that customers receive the information they need about the collection of used packaging.
• ensure that collected packaging is recovered, recycled and put to good use as either new raw material or energy.

In Sweden, this affects over 10,000 companies, and the majority of EU countries have corresponding legislation. Operations are financed mainly through packaging fees that are paid by producers. Operations run without a profit interest so that collection and recycling costs have minimal impact on the price of goods.

The main rule is that the importer of packaged goods and/or the packaging filler need to declare and pay the packaging fee. There are exceptions that apply to so-called service packaging whereby Swedish Plastic Recycling charges the packaging fee to the packaging manufacturer or importer instead of to the individual stores. The most common service packaging is carry bags.
