On Saturday, 15 November, Svensk Plaståtervinning took centre stage in the kitchen department at IKEA Barkarby. The aim was to increase Swedes’ knowledge of plastic recycling, waste sorting and circularity. When plastic is sorted correctly, emissions from incineration are reduced, while the supply of recycled raw materials increases for companies such as IKEA.
– Many people want to do the right thing but don’t always know how. That’s why meeting people is so important. It’s very valuable that players such as IKEA are involved in promoting the issue and helping to increase awareness,” says Therese Cederblom, Sales Manager at Svensk Plaståtervinning.
– I am happy and proud that we are helping to inspire more people to recycle and reduce their climate impact. It’s an issue that affects all our customers,” says Sara Isbäck, Assistant Store Manager at IKEA Barkarby.
IKEA has long been working to increase the proportion of recycled materials in its products.
– We use recycled plastic in products such as the Hållbar sorting bin, which consists of at least 50 per cent recycled material. We want to increase that proportion – and in more products. But to do that, we need help collecting used plastic,” continues Sara Isbäck.
Plastic strip, crafts and sorting challenge
On Saturday, Svensk Plaståtervinning’s kitchen environment was filled with curious visitors. Children and adults got to meet the mascot Plastrid, do crafts, test plastic puzzles and visit a music cabin with a brand new plastic song. Visitors also got to feel recycled materials in the form of flakes and granules and take part in a sorting challenge.
– It becomes tangible when people see the whole cycle: from used plastic packaging, via washed recycled material, to new packaging or products – such as IKEA’s sorting bins. Then you understand that recycling works and that it is worth sorting your waste, says Therese Cederblom.
