Grand opening of Site Zero

Online press conference, November 15

Welcome to a press conference with Svensk Plaståtervinning announcing the opening of the world’s biggest and most advanced plastic sorting and recycling plant. Svensk Plaståtervinning will share information about the plant and how it will contribute to the climate goals and enable the development of a market for recycled plastic raw materials. The CEO, Mattias Philipsson, will also explain how Site Zero has become an international role model even before opening.

The press conference will be held at 12:00 on 15 November 2023. The event can be viewed here and on-site from Site Zero in Motala. It will be in English, with the option of asking questions in the chat.

Press lunch will be served at 11:30 am. 

After the press conference, the CEO at Svensk Plaståtervinning will be available for interviews. Åsa Stenmarck, responsible for plastics at Naturvårdsverket (the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency), will also be attending together with Karin Jawerth, packaging manager at ICA. Representatives from Tomra and Sutco, plant suppliers, attend to answer questions about equipment and technology.

  • Agglomereringskapacitet för: kemisk återvinning, kompositprodukter

  • System: helautomatiserad process, realtidsoptimering, artificiell intelligens
  • Total investering: ungefär 1 miljard SEK (2019–2023). Projektet har delfinansierats av Naturvårdsverket genom Klimatklivet (ca 207 miljoner SEK)

  • Size: approx. 60,000 sqm
  • Receiving capacity: 200 000 tons of mixed plastic packaging from housholds per year
  • Sorting speed: approx. 1 000 packaging per second.
  • Sorting capacity: rigid PP, rigid HDPE, flexible LDPE, PET trays, transparent PET bottles, colored PET bottles, flexible PP, EPS, PS, PVC, two grades of mixed Polyolefins, metals, and non-plastic waste
  • Sorting sensors: 60 Near Infrared-sensors, laser and camera technology

  • Agglomeration output intended for: chemical recycling, composite products

  • System: Fully automated, digitalized real-time optimization

  • Total investment: approx. SEK 1 billion (year 2019-2023). The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket) has financed just over 207 million SEK through the climate investment program Climate Leap (Klimatklivet)
